Camera Gear for Rock Climbing Films

WHAT I USE TO FILM ROCK CLIMBING

Immersing viewers into the thrilling world of bouldering demands more than just passion and skill; it requires top-notch filming gear to capture the essence of the sport. As a dedicated bouldering enthusiast and content creator, I have honed my equipment selection to produce captivating footage that showcases the beauty and excitement of this unique activity. In this comprehensive article, I will delve deeper into the tools I rely on to film my bouldering adventures, from my primary cameras to the audio and stabilization equipment that elevate the storytelling process.

Primary Camera Body - Sony A7siii

The centerpiece of my filmmaking arsenal is the remarkable Sony A7siii. This full-frame mirrorless camera is revered for its exceptional low-light capabilities and stunning 4K video recording. When I'm out in nature or exploring the rocky terrain, the A7siii delivers impeccable image quality, allowing me to capture every subtle detail, from the texture of the rocks to the shifting sunlight across the landscapes.

Its unmatched performance in low-light conditions ensures that my footage remains sharp and vibrant even during dusk and dawn shoots, providing a cinematic experience to my audience.

Secondary Camera Body - Sony A7iii

As a professional bouldering filmmaker, having a reliable backup camera body is essential. The Sony A7iii seamlessly fills this role with its impressive autofocus system and impressive dynamic range. During shoots that require multiple angles and perspectives, the A7iii enables me to diversify my shots and capture every moment from various vantage points. Its robust features make it an invaluable asset when I need to switch quickly between cameras without compromising on quality.

Most Used Lens (Outdoors) - Sony 24-105mm f/4

Out in the open, capturing the sweeping vistas and exhilarating climbs of bouldering necessitates a versatile lens. Enter the Sony 24-105mm f/4 lens, which has become my go-to choice for outdoor bouldering shoots. With its broad focal range, I can seamlessly transition from wide-angle shots that encompass the entire scene to zoomed-in close-ups that focus on the climbers' expressions and movements. The lens's constant f/4 aperture ensures consistent performance across all focal lengths, making it an indispensable tool for capturing the dynamic nature of bouldering.

Most Used Lens (Indoors) - Sony 35mm f/1.8 (usually paired with a 1/4 pro mist filter)

Indoor bouldering sessions offer a different ambiance, and the Sony 35mm f/1.8 lens proves to be the ideal companion for these environments. Its wide aperture of f/1.8 allows for exceptional low-light performance, enabling me to film even in dimly lit indoor climbing gyms without compromising on quality. The 35mm focal length provides a natural perspective, bringing viewers closer to the action while maintaining a cinematic feel. Paired with a 1/4 pro mist filter, this lens infuses my footage with a dreamy, ethereal quality, enhancing the storytelling aspect of my videos.

Other lenses I use frequently - Sony 14mm (great for top down angles) and Sony 85mm (great for extra tight details)

To expand my creative horizons, I frequently incorporate two additional lenses into my bouldering filming setup. The Sony 14mm lens is perfect for capturing unique top-down angles, allowing me to showcase the climbers' movements from a dramatic and immersive perspective. On the other end of the spectrum, the Sony 85mm lens is a gem for capturing extreme close-ups, unveiling intricate details and emotions that make the audience feel intimately connected to the climbers' experiences.

Audio - Tascam DR-10L and Rode VideoMic Pro

Beyond stunning visuals, high-quality audio is paramount in any filmmaking endeavor. The Tascam DR-10L lavaliere microphone serves as my go-to choice for interviews and dialogues during bouldering expeditions. Its discreet design and exceptional audio capturing capabilities ensure that every spoken word is crystal clear, adding depth and authenticity to the storytelling process. For on-the-go recording and capturing the ambient sounds of nature, especially during outdoor bouldering shoots, the Rode VideoMic Pro excels at providing immersive and rich audio quality, further immersing viewers in the bouldering experience.

Drone (rarely used for bouldering but I’ll list it anyway) - DJI Mavic Air 2s

Though bouldering filming rarely incorporates aerial shots, the DJI Mavic Air 2s deserves a special mention. This compact and powerful drone boasts advanced features and 4K video recording, offering stunning aerial perspectives of the bouldering locations and their surrounding landscapes. While I use it sparingly, it remains an essential tool for showcasing the breathtaking grandeur of nature during certain bouldering adventures.

Gimbal - Zhiyun Weebil S

To ensure smooth and stable footage, a reliable gimbal is crucial. The Zhiyun Weebill S stands out as my preferred stabilizer, offering excellent control and balance for my cameras. Its lightweight design and user-friendly features make it effortless to handle, allowing me to achieve fluid and dynamic shots even in the most challenging terrains. Whether I'm navigating rugged outdoor trails or filming fast-paced indoor climbs, the Weebill S elevates the visual appeal of my videos, keeping viewers engaged and immersed in the action.

Using Cameras as a Tool For Exploration…

As a passionate rock climbing enthusiast and filmmaker, my gear setup plays an integral role in translating my love for the sport into captivating and awe-inspiring videos. From the cutting-edge Sony cameras and lenses that capture every nuanced detail to the audio and stabilization equipment that immerse viewers in the bouldering experience, each piece of gear serves a distinct purpose in elevating my storytelling.

Whether I'm exploring nature's wonders or navigating indoor bouldering challenges, my carefully curated equipment ensures that my audience shares in the thrill and beauty of bouldering through my lens.
