About
If you’ve read anything on this website so far you might know this:
Roo is a Emmy nominated documentary filmmaker and commercial director based in Boulder, Colorado but travels all around the world for his filmmaking career. He has directed documentaries for Patagonia in California, produced films for Outside Magazine throughout Europe and Africa, camera operated for Netflix in the Rocky Mountain West, photographed among indigenous communities in South America, and has received notable recognition in the outdoor industry for his work telling uplifting stories in the outdoor space.
But I’m more than my accomplishments…
Here are some lesser known facts about me that make me who I am:
I grew up on an island of 2,000 people then spent middle school and high school living abroad in Costa Rica and the U.K..
I volunteer with elementary school kids most Sundays when I’m in Boulder and it’s one of my favorite things I do.
I surf, ski, mountain bike, rock climb, snowboard, backcountry ski/splitboard, trail run, swim, paddleboard, and skateboard. If it’s an outdoor sport - odds are I do it as a part of my film and photo projects.
Some Netflix directors once told me that my films were “cute” and I “filmed from the female gaze” and those are the best compliments I’ve ever received about my work.
I’m plant based and don’t eat sugar (mostly). Health and wellness is really important to me.
I’m passionate about what I do, but work is not the most important thing to me. Love is.
My Filmmaking Ethos
I create original films that are deeply personal and human, exploring the quiet beauty and vulnerability of life in the outdoors. My films are intimate portraits of connection between people, places, and the powerful emotions that drive us to seek adventure.
My films are rooted in the belief that nature belongs to everyone, and that in its vastness, there is space for every voice and experience.
Through delicate, heartfelt storytelling, I aim to capture the moments that often go unseen, revealing the strength, resilience, and tenderness that define our shared journey in the wild places of the world. These films often premiere at film festivals and will get signed to TV networks and online streaming platforms for distribution.
Professional Accomplishments I’m Proud Of
My documentary Unseen Peaks - which follows a blind athlete navigating skiing, ice climbing, and rock climbing - premiered in nearly 100 AMC theaters nationwide and earned an Emmy nomination and won “Best Short Film” at Lookout Wild Film Festival. That recognition was a huge milestone for me, not just because of the nomination, but because of the impact the film had in showing that the outdoors is for everyone. A few other notable films I’ve made include Canopy Climbers, The Summit Within and Ignite Your Spirit.
Another project that means a lot to me is The Goat Surf Club which blends my love for surfing, storytelling, and environmental advocacy. It’s a 3 season online tv series I created with two friends that’s been licensed to Waterbear Network and Outside Magazine for distribution.
Who I’ve Worked With
Beyond independent films, I’ve worked with some of the biggest outdoor brands, including Patagonia, The North Face, La Sportiva, Mammut and Keen, creating branded documentaries that prioritize storytelling over mindless content.
My work has taken me to extreme environments, from high-altitude mountains to remote ocean waves, and has been featured at the biggest outdoor film festivals and across streaming platforms like HBO, Netflix and Hulu.
I’ve also had the opportunity to speak about filmmaking on the Backcountry Marketing Podcast, The Visual Revolutionary and various other podcasts and events. I also run a mildly successful YouTube Channel documenting my journey as an adventure filmmaker. Through it all, my biggest accomplishment is continuing to tell meaningful stories - stories that inspire, challenge, and bring people closer to the outdoors.
