Branded Documentary Production in Colorado
I’m Roo Smith, a 3x Emmy-nominated commercial and documentary director based in Boulder, Colorado. I create branded documentaries, brand films and documentary-style commercials for companies, agencies and organizations in Denver, across Colorado and beyond.
My work spans technology and robotics, finance, wellness, biotechnology and the outdoors. The common thread is real people, emotional storytelling and a clear creative point of view.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. I can lead a project from story research and creative development through pre-production, directing, filming, editing and final delivery.
I build the crew around the concept, locations and deliverables, with production, cinematography, lighting, sound and other specialists as needed. You have a director-led creative partner throughout the process.
-
Every production is scoped individually. The budget depends on creative development, locations, crew, filming requirements, post-production and the number of final deliverables.
Share your goals, timing and working budget, and I’ll recommend an approach that gives the story and production the resources they need.
-
Totally! I can join an agency or existing production company as director, or build and lead the entire production myself.
Whatever you need, I got you :)
-
For sure!
For many outdoor campaigns, combining film and photography is one of the best ways to get more value from the athletes, locations and production days already being funded.
Depending on the scope, I'll photograph the campaign myself or bring in additional photographers so both mediums get the attention they deserve.
-
A little of all three :)
I can come onto a project purely as a director, work as a small filmmaking team, or build out the full production around the idea.
Some projects need three athletic people and cameras in backpacks.
Others need producers, photographers, sound mixers, stylists, drone operators and a much larger crew.
The story and budget decides how big or small I work!

Yes. My work includes robotics and technology, financial services, wellness, biotechnology and outdoor brands. A documentary approach is useful wherever real people and a thoughtful story can make a brand more meaningful.
For examples, explore the Scythe Robotics campaign, WishGarden’s Meet the Moment campaign and the Elevations Credit Union films in my portfolio.
From the first idea to the final film
I lead creative development, story research and pre-production, then assemble the crew the project needs for filming, sound, lighting and production support. In post-production, I shape the edit and coordinate finishing and delivery for your campaign.
That might mean a focused documentary crew or a larger commercial production. We agree on the scope, deliverables and budget around your goals—every production is custom.
Tell me about your audience, the story you want to tell, where the film will run and your timing. We’ll work out the right production approach together.
